研究の目的：
　 本研究は、文法機能語に着目しながら、連鎖(chain)の概念と性質を解明することにより、言語の普遍的性質を捉えて、理論言語学の観点から汎用力が高い諸言語の言語事象の分析を提案するものである。特に、理論言語学の第一人者である海外研究協力者との共同研究を重視し、国際ワークショップ・シンポジウム等の開催などを通して、研究の促進と発展を目的としている。本研究が研究主題としている連鎖(chain)の概念と言うのは、生成文法理論で長らく中心的な役割を果たしてきた。しかしながら、連鎖の性質はまだはっきりと理解されてはいない。本研究の目標は、ミニマリストプログラムの理論的観点から、経験的手法で様々な言語（英語、日本語、スペイン語、イタリア語な ど）の多岐に渡る言語事実を調査することによって、以下にあげる３つの疑問点を解明することにある。

1) 連鎖の存在を示唆する経験的証拠と言うのは、どういうものなのか （連鎖の概念は特定の言語事象の分析にどのぐらい中心的な役割を果たしているのか）？
2) どの様な言語要素が連鎖を構成するのか？連鎖は、どの様にして、理論で定義されるべきなのか？
3) 連鎖の形成と解釈を司るメカニズムというのは何であるのか？

又、これらの疑問点に取り組む際に、本研究は以下の項目を下位研究課題として構成されるものとする。量化詞作用域（quantifier-scope）の曖昧性・選択・再構築効果の性質コントロール(control)と前方照応(anaphora)の性質拡大投射原理(EPP)、主語の連鎖、主語の解釈の性質左方周縁領域(left periphery: 統語構造図作成計画の一環the cartography of syntactic structures)への移動の性質本研究の目的は、これらの言語事象を理論的、経験的な視点から解明するのに貢献し、1)-3)までの疑問点に明確な解答を与えることにある。

The concept of chain has long played a central role in the theory of generative grammar. Yet the precise nature of chains is still not well understood. From the theoretical perspective of the minimalist program, our goal in this research project is to shed light on the questions in 1) ~ 3) below by examining a range of empirical phenomena in several different languages (English, Japanese, Spanish, Italian, etc.):

1) What empirical evidence is there for the existence of chains (to what degree does the notion of chain play a crucial role in the analysis of particular linguistic phenomena)?
2) What kind of objects are chains? How should they be defined in the theory?
3) What are the mechanisms of chain formation and interpretation?

In addressing these questions, our research will be organized around the following sub-projects:

a. The nature of quantifier-scope ambiguities, preferences, and reconstruction effects
b. The nature of control and anaphora
c. The nature of the EPP, subject chains and the interpretation of subjects
d. The nature of movements to the left periphery (cartography)

Our goal is to contribute to the theoretical and empirical understanding of these phenomena and, in doing so, provide answers to the questions in 1) ~ 3) above.
